SEO Is All About Spying on Your Competitors’ Data

Most SEO tools charge you for data you don't need. This article breaks down the three metrics that actually move your rankings — and exposes the ones that are pure noise.

This article is written to save you thousands of dollars you invest monthly on SEO tool subscriptions.

The primary job of SEO is to find out what your competitors are doing — how they are bringing in the most relevant traffic to their app or site. Therefore, the job of an SEO tool is also to provide competitor data. Yet most SEO tools in the market charge very high prices for backlinks data, competitor traffic data, keyword volume data, and AI citation data.

Let me tell you what metrics actually matter in SEO — and what you are paying for that you simply don’t need.

1. Website Auditing — You Are Already Overpaying

Website auditing is the first thing every SEO tool sells you on — and charges a premium for. But here is the truth: you can add your site link along with your page links directly into Claude and ask it to do an SEO audit for a specific keyword. It gets done — for free. Yet we keep paying these bigger SEO tools for the exact same output.

2. SERP Data — The One Thing You Actually Need

SERP data is something Claude itself cannot provide — and this is where the real SEO work begins.

Suppose you want to rank your homepage for a keyword. You need to check which pages are already ranking for that keyword. That is SERP data. You can do this manually for one or two pages — but your site has different keywords targeted across different pages, and doing this manually at scale is simply not possible.

Once you have the SERP data — the pages ranking for your target keyword — the next question is: why are they ranking? You have already done your on-page SEO and fixed your technical issues, yet you are still outside the top results. The reason is almost always backlinks. Your competitors have built backlinks to those specific pages, and that is why they outrank you.

3. Backlinks Data — Fair Pricing Exists

Backlinks data is genuinely useful, and I appreciate that most SEO tools do provide it. Once you identify the pages outranking you via SERP data, backlinks data tells you exactly where their authority is coming from — which domains are linking to them, and on which pages.

4. AI Citation Data — But Not the Way Most Tools Show It

The third important metric in SEO today is AI mention and citation data — but most tools are getting this completely wrong.

They show you numbers like: “You are mentioned 25 times in ChatGPT, 20 times in Gemini, 40 times in Claude and Perplexity.” That data is useless. It does not increase your revenue. What good is a number if I don’t know the context?

What you actually need is AI mention data tied to the specific keywords and queries you are targeting — which pages are getting cited for those queries, and who is beating you. That is actionable data. That is what moves the needle.

The Most Overrated Metric: Keyword Volume

Keyword volume data from SEO tools is all estimation. Semrush shows one number. Ahrefs shows another. DataForSEO shows a third. Your Google Search Console tells a completely different story — and GSC is the only one pulling from real data.

The only keyword and query data with accurate numbers is what sits inside your Google Search Console. Do not rely on third-party keyword volume metrics for traffic decisions. Use Google Keyword Planner for keyword research — it comes straight from Google’s own data.

DR/DA — Who Is Actually Calculating These Numbers?

Domain Rating (DR) and Domain Authority (DA) are proprietary scores created by SEO tools themselves. There is no universal standard. These numbers are calculated internally by each tool based on the backlink profiles they have indexed — and every tool has a different index. Google does not use DR or DA as a ranking signal. Stop making decisions based on these vanity metrics.

What Actually Matters in SEO

Strip away the noise and here is what you actually need:

  • SERP Data — to see who is ranking for your target keywords and on which pages.
  • Backlinks Data — to understand why they are ranking and where their authority comes from.
  • AI Citation Data — tied to the specific queries you are targeting, not just vanity mention counts.

That is it. Everything else is either free or noise. Stop paying for data that does not move your rankings or your revenue.
